Msg below from David Thompson, Christchurch:

On the 22nd of August 2009 we're planning a Mods and Rockers run from Christchurch city to New Brighton for scooter owners riding classic style and vintage scooters and motorcyclists riding classic style and 1960 – 1970s era British motorcycles. Once at Brighton we will engage in a series of (non-violent) contests such as a quiz or a tug of war and the winning group (either Mods on scooters or Rockers on bikes) will be presented with a trophy, and that group will lead the ride back to Christchurch with the vanquished foes following.

Once back in Christchurch the groups will meet at Poplar lane where local bars The Vespa Room and The Twisted Hop will host a party including food and entertainment - they're planning to have their staff dressed as mods or rockers and will screen Quadraphenia on the big screens in both bars plus they are looking for a band that can play period music. If the Mods win the trophy will be placed behind the bar of The Vespa Room and if the Rockers win it will be placed behind the bar of The Twisted Hop. There will also be a contest for the best scooter and best bike and for best dressed mod and best dressed rocker. Secure storage is available for motorcycles and scooters allowing participants to celebrate and enjoy the event without worrying about drinking and riding.

TV3 have expressed interest in doing a 20/20 documentary on it and the local print media will be inundated with press releases and invitations to cover the event, so if you want profile for the passion of scooter ownership; this is your chance. I'll also have a section on our website www.streetandsport.co.nz covering the event with links to all relevant websites including yours.

I know we're a long way from Auckland, but we need as many classic styled Vespas and vintage scooters and riders as possible, and if you know any scooteristi down here or have any members willing to embark on a trip to the south, that would be awesome to have you here. If you have any questions plse contact me.

it says it is based on return travel then below it says off peak each way. Are the fairs one way or return only on off peak sailings and if I take a van 120 does this include the driver or do I pay another 38.00. I guess if it is 158 return for a van and a scooter this is pretty good value. 120 even better. I might have to free up some time for this and a little extra trip around the south in winter bbrrrrrrr -5 here last night WTF.

Those are the fares each

Those are the fares each way. But you have to book a return fare to get those fares.

Vehicles are separate to people. So you pay for the van and any people with it. But you don't pay for the scooter if it is in the van.

according to this it will cost me 158.00 one way 316 return.
I go to interislanders website and without the group booking with a choice of one way or return it is 144.00 one way or 288.00 return. Correct me if I am wrong but I would have to pass on that discount if it is going to cost me and extra 28.00 and I suggest everyone else to do the same. Are you sure you got that right.

By all means do your

By all means do your homework and compare fares. Don't forget to check out Bluebridge as well. If you want to book now and can get it cheaper than do so. The group discount is available (as long as space is available, on off peak sailings) right up until August, when those web saver fares will likely have disappeared. In my experience most scooterists leave booking tickets til the last minute. And the fares for people and scooters are discounted more than cars and vans. It is a motorcycle and scooter event after all.

Anyway I'm not even going on the ferry, I'm flying.

you are right about the scooter fairs, they are much cheaper but there is no discount on the vehicle fairs in fact even the non websaver ones are 157.00, a dollar cheaper then the group ones. You would have thought that they would have made some kind of effort. Oh well.

Mods and Rockers: Momentum is building up and I’m regularly getting
calls and emails from all over the country, so something tells me
there’ll be a fair few of us. I’m looking forward to riding through
the Lyttleton tunnel surrounded by dozens of bikes and scooters – the
sound will be very nice indeeed, and I think we’ll turn a few heads.
I’m charging $20.00 for pre-registering and going to donate the money
to the NZ Spinal Trust – they’re a great organisation who help a lot
of us out, and they don’t get a lot of money so we can really make a
difference. If you register before the 15th of August you’ll get a
fabric patch and go in the draw to win a KBC VR2 helmet valued at over
$500.00. After the 15th the registration increases to $30, you won’t
get a free patch and won’t go in the draw – I want as many people to
pre-register as possible so I have a clear idea of numbers. There is a
registration form on our website www.streetandsport.co.nz or you can
register in person at the shop. (David Thompson)
